The big question remains: “How can it be explained that man has been living in the Vézère valley, this prehistoric treasure trove, for so long?” Let’s ask the experts in geology.
This valley shows a natural incision in the rock surface, dating from the Coniacian (between 89.3 Ma and 85.8 Ma), which was an ideal string of shelters for our distant ancestors who had not yet turned their hands to bulding.
Theirs was a life of wide open spaces - and hidden away in their rock shelters lies undeniable evidence of their creative and imaginative minds:
those extraordinary and enigmatic rock art messages.

It is to be regretted that today so very little remains of this rift. Most of it is deep down beneath our feet – swallowed up a tiny bit more each day.
