“IN MY ANIMAL SKIN” is the adventure of a peasant farmer going back and forth between his farm and his cave, with the same respect for his age-old mammoths down in his cave as for his newly-born calves up in his cattle shed.

Un film sur le plaisir que nous procure la préhistoire, physiquement, lorsqu’il nous est donné de pénétrer dans le monde souterrain et d’y découvrir des peintures et des dessins, captures de l’imaginaire de ces humains que nous étions, au temps des mammouths. Ça nous fascine et ça nous fait du bien. Surtout quand le guide est amoureux fou de sa grotte, à tout jamais. C’est le portrait de Gilbert Pémendrant, droit dans ses bottes, droit dans sa grotte, propriétaire de la septième grotte ornée découverte au monde, la grotte de Bernifal à Meyrals, en Dordogne.

A film about the magical appeal of prehistory, the sheer physical pleasure of going deep down into the underground world and discovering paintings and drawings testifying to the artistry of those human beings we once were - when mammoths were legion. The experience is indeed fascinating and extremely gratifying…. even more so when your guide is someone who is madly in love with his cave – the cave that will be cherished forever. The film is a portrayal of Gilbert Pémendrant, the owner of the seventh painted cave to be discovered in the world: Bernifal Cave in Meyrals, Dordogne.

En 1908, les abbés Jean et Amédée Bouyssonie découvrent dans une grotte en Corrèze le squelette robuste et fort bien conservé d’un homme de Néandertal. L’affaire fait grand bruit car les deux abbés décrivent une fosse et des offrandes, donc une sépulture rappelant celle du cimetière tout proche. Or, à l’époque, l’homme de Néandertal est tenu par les savants pour un gorille amélioré, ce fameux chaînon manquant entre le singe et l’homme qui, on le sait depuis, n’a jamais existé.
À l’occasion du Centenaire de sa découverte, le 3 août 2008, le fossile original du fameux Néandertal eut la permission de rentrer au pays. Sa précieuse vitrine fut portée par les villageois jusque dans la chapelle avec beaucoup d’émotion. « Ce n’était plus un fossile, c’était un vieux de chez nous qui nous avait demandé de le porter dans l’Église. Enfin, on le reconnaissait en tant qu’homme, comme un vieux de notre terre. » Un symbole, celui d’une réhabilitation, obtenue après un siècle de recherche assidue, raconté dans ce film par les meilleurs spécialistes de cet homme préhistorique, revenu à grand peine parmi nous.

CENTENARY OF THE DISCOVERY OF “THE OLD MAN” OF LA CHAPELLE-AUX-SAINTS
The smallest village in Corrèze organized the most impressive centenary event ever in celebration of the most illustrious Neanderthal: “The Old Man” of La Chapelle-aux-Saints. On the discovery of his skeleton all the members of his family rejoined the vast family of Humankind – causing quite an uproar. He was buried by his companions about 45,000 ago – and only human beings bury their dead. The great ape label that had been stuck on him had now to go. He remains, a hundred years on, a key figure in the history of prehistory as we trace back to our origins. He may not, as yet, enjoy the status of “ancestor”, but he does have the status of “cousin” with the same ancestor as us somewhere down the line.
